ATEX certified level regulators for hazardeous environments

Since July 1 2003, all level measurement devices marketed in the European Community for hazardous environments applications must be ATEX certified according to the European Directive ATEX 2014/34/UE. It is important to know that it is the customer’s sole responsibility to determine before installation if its production / operation facilities are located in a hazardous area.

Explosive atmospheres formed by gases, vapors and combustible dusts are often encountered in chemical, hydrocarbons, bioethanol plants, as well as in river and fecal waters producing black gas.

ATEX hazardous environments:

  • Explosive dust clouds:
    corn, flour, organic powders, …
  • Flammable gas:
    town gas, propane, butane, …
  • Flammable vapors:
    ethanol, acetone, toluene, kerosene …
  • Flammable liquid mists:
    aerosol, …

Nevertheless, a non-hazardous can become potentially explosive. How? Let’s take the following example, in summer, water is scarce. The scarce rain carries the pollutants along its way. As a result, rain water tanks and other containers for urban effluents end up having high pollutant concentrations, thus creating a rather permanent potentially explosive risk.

For this reason, it is strongly recommended not to take any risk in this domain, as the consequences could be disastrous.

To secure your facilities in a reliable way, ATMI has developed the SOBA EX, ATEX certified float level regulator for hazardous areas 0, 1 ,2 (gas) and 20, 21, 22 (dust).
